How to add an announcement bar to your Squarespace website

What is a website announcement bar & why is it useful?

Ok.  The clue is in the name right?!! But what exactly is an announcement bar.

It’s that full length skinny banner that sits right at the very very very top of your website, above the header.  And basically, it’s job is to tell your customers important, useful or urgent information to help inform their decisions and nudge them to take action on your website. To announce something to them you might say!!!

You want to use your announcement bar to share any important info that’s going to entice or inform your customer.

What to put in your announcement bar.

Some examples of good things to stick in your announcement bar:

  • Free shipping over x amount.

  • Next batch drops on x date.

  • 10% off when you sign up to our email list (with a link to sign up).

  • Sign up to our email list for x, y or z reason.

  • Sale starts on x date.

  • Sale now on: ends on x date.

  • Free shipping this weekend only.

  • Now taking bookings for x date (with a link to booking page)

  • On holiday: orders will be shipped on our return on x date

  • Last orders for Christmas is x date.

You want to keep your announcement bar updated depending on what’s happening within your business at that given time.

So, if you are going on holiday for example - let your customers know that orders won’t be shipped until your back and give them the date… Or if you are running a special sale or have an event coming up… shout about it in your announcement bar.

Or if you are a service business and your booked up till June, tell people in your announcement bar your have availability in July.

top tip: have a few ‘stock’ entries for your announcement bar (sign up to our email list or free shipping over x amount are good ones) This way it’s super easier to change it back once your special event is over.

How to edit your announcement bar.

To find your announcement bar, navigate to:
pages > scroll down to marketing tools > announcement bar > toggle on: enable announcement bar > type your announcement in there & hit save.

Super simple.

To add a link into it…click the attach link button below.  This will turn the whole entire announcement bar into a clickable link.  Which is great as it means wherever people click, they will be taken to the link…

…the only potential problem is that people might not know it’s a link as it’s not underlined, so I often underline a few relevant words to let people unequivocally understand that this is a link and they should definitely absolutely without a doubt click it.

Keep your announcement bar updated regularly.

Out of date information on an announcement bar is kinda frustrating to a customer and instills a slight lack of trust.  SO. If you do change it to a time specific thing like a holiday or a sale or special offer… set yourself a reminder to change it back.

This shows people that your website is active and maintained and helps with building the trust that you will do the thing on your website that you say you are going to do.
